rangers game!!

today friend sammy took me to my first rangers game!
it was also my first hockey game (besides sister's high school games)
and my first time in madison square garden!

the rangers got CREAMED.

and there was only one mildly exciting fight between some guy on the rangers and some guy on the flyers whose ratty hair was longer than mine
...at which point i stood up and yelled,
"cut your hair, DOOFUS"

but it was one of the best times ever!!

i love hockey now.

yes, i still make gingerbread houses!

and i still pray every year that it will not cave in on itself, like
the great gingerbread house catastrophe of '96.
{...but we don't talk about that}

red velvet whoopie pies

these. are. so. good.
if i were still in elementary school, i'd want THESE in my princess lunch box.
make them right now.

mum and i used this recipe:

ingredients

1 1/2 cups of sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup oil
1 ounce red food coloring
1 ounce water
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon of really good (not that mccormick shit, trust me) vanilla
1 cup buttermilk
3 1/2 cups flour
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

filling

3 egg whites
3 teaspoons vanilla
6 tablespoons flour
3 tablespoons milk
2 1/4 cups butter flavored shortening
5 cups powdered sugar
a pinch of salt

directions
(or as friend craig calls them, "clues")

1. combine cocoa, food coloring and water.
2. set aside to dissolve.
3. blend together oil, sugar & eggs.
4. add food coloring mixture.
5. combine buttermilk, salt & vanilla.
6. add to mixture.
7. add flour.
8. dissolve soda in vinegar.
9. fold into batter.
10. drop with an ice cream scoop onto parchment on cookie sheets.
11. bake about 10 minutes at 350.
12. fill with whoopie pie filling.

filling:
1. beat egg whites until stiff.
2. add vanilla, flour & milk and beat well.
3. add shortening, sugar & salt
4. whip on high speed for 3-5 minutes
5. poke your finger in and taste...

i'm convinced.
whoopie pies are the cupcakes of the new decade.

sweet home chicago

after a wonderful day of practicing, chicken and dumpling soup,
and a quiche and cake date with one of my very favorite teacher friends,

i flew home to chicago.

(and along the way completed my last paper of the semester! yay!)

things i came home to:

1. a new pair of mustard yellow flats sitting on my bed.

2. freshly baked pumpkin bread with chocolate chips.

3. homemade tomato soup with basil from our garden.

4. a fridge stocked full of mustard.

some of the highlights are...
-stonewall kitchen's basil pesto mustard
-napa vally's stone ground mustard
-sierra nevada's pale ale and honey spice mustard

5. little post-it notes all over my bathroom mirror asking
if today was going to be
a schnitzel day?
or
a swedish meatball day ?
or
both?
and do i want to go shoe shopping?

6. a naked hannukah bush,
waiting to be ornamented on christmas eve
(does that even make sense?)

7. a huge jar of nutella

...all thanks to my super mum!!!
you'd think she's trying to get me to come more often or something :-)

today is preparation day for our annual
dumplings of the world extravaganza
read: i get to experience sweet smells of potsticker and samosa filling while i practice marimba in the living room.
and mum gets serenaded by sweet sounds of bach while she cooks up the potsticker and samosa filling in the kitchen.
{it's a symbiotic relationship}

oh and did i mention it's a balmy
negative ZILLION degrees fahrenheit outside?

shameless loves, by elle

things that elle loves
{but really probably shouldn't}

1. cole haan shoes and handbags. it helps that i have the secret 50% off weapon...or maybe it doesn't help.

2. when my 5-pound-maltese acts mean and tough. he thinks he's such a gangster, but i think he's too cute!

3. perfect manicure colors that make me feel like i felt when i was a kid and my mom would paint my nails. i love these colors so much that I've spend an undisclosed amount of money in search for the perfect shades for every season.

4. body piercings. inside i know that I am a little too old to still feel like a rebel over a pierced ear, nose or bellybutton. truth be told, i'm just a wannabe rebel.

5. country music. what a girl who loves punk and ska is doing jamming out to kenny chesney is unexplainable.

6. fried foods. i can't go out to eat when i'm trying to lose weight, because i have no self control. when i see breaded jalapeƱos or teriyaki chicken wings on the menu, it's all over.

7. boutique shopping. i too-often forgo sweet deals in favor of small shops where all of the attention is on me!

8. cheese! brie, gruyere, gouda, cream cheese, cheddar, goat cheese, pepper jack. it's really out of control. wow is a girl ever supposed to lose a few pounds when she is burdened with such a passion for cheese?

9. online shopping. i never realize just how much i've shopped until the UPS man arrives.

10. education. i aspire to be a career student and as anyone who has student loans knows, this comes with a large price tag.

yay cheese! you have come to the right blog :-)

thank you, miss elle!
and a very happy no shame (december) to you!

it's out.

everybody, my very first recording has just been released!

it features the pops,
but him and i are soloing on one of the tracks together :-)

we recorded it when i was in high school and it has just now come out!
{i can still taste the AMAZING southern comfort food we ate when we were staying in columbus, georgia to record}

the piece i'm in is
michael burritt's
duo concertante for clarinet, percussion, and wind ensemble
it is SO FUN to play!
marimba + lots of loud drums... my fave :-)

so.... in case you're in need of a holiday present for that friend
who has a thing for clarinet and percussion music,
order it here

bits and things

1. on my walk to school today, i made a mental note that,
"no, it is not warm today in new york city."
and one block later i saw a sign for a soon to be opened

my excitement made me forget how absurd it is for an italian ice shop to open in december.
rita's italian ice is the best sterile institution in america.
i could eat that stuff every day.
especially when they have pistachio.

2. i played the john adams chamber symphony last night in alice tully hall.
i loves me some john adams.
especially when he writes for the drumset
(errr, drumset - cymbals + rototoms x a whole roll of duck tape for dampening purposes)
i was a bit afraid of playing loudly though because in alice tully hall
if you scratch your forehead the wrong way,
the brotha in the back row of the audience will hear it.
...and i like playing loud?
{read the review here}

3. vosges mo's bacon chocolate chip pancake mix?
yes, plz.

4. a mediumly boiled egg from ramen setagaya is number 7 in time out new york's best food of 2009.
ummm k.

5. i've eaten nothing but hot pockets for the past week.

6. i think wasabi would make for a good ice cream flavor.
(or maybe my taste buds are skewed from said daily hot pockets?)

7. my holiday playlist:

sufjan stevens' christmas album
owl city's ocean eyes

8. happy first night of hanukkah

if santa claus and hanukah harry had a love child...

{this is what i would ask him for}

1. a camera...

as my baby canon that i've had forever just died :-(

2. this marc by marc jacobs beauty.
i mean, duh, it's mustard yellow.

3. tickets to the ring at bayreuth
"...in the majority of cases we shall be able to deal with first-time applicants only after a period of several years"
-the baruther festpielehaus on applying for tickets

4. an old fashioned record player + some old french records,
a la jenny from an education
{and a fire place in my apartment to sit by and listen...}

5. a life long membership to murray's cheese of the month club

{...and also... stocking stuffers rock my WORLD}

matte nail polish
a leather {lined} journal

this.

...and a roger cline volume adjustable ratchet
{don't even ask}

that's all, schmanta clausenstein.

shameless loves, by sarah

things that sarah loves
{but really probably shouldn't}

1. online shopping/fashion sites. shopbop, revolveclothing, gilt, whowhatweardaily, etc etc etc

2. matt damon

3. shameless girl crush on sienna miller

4. eating/drinking at starbucks using their glassware,
and then sneakily walking out with it.
i almost have a full dinnerware set

5. nick jonas, the youngest of the jonas brothers.

6. dim sum. all day, baby.

7. flannel shirts

8. whenever i go grocery shopping i head straight to the bakery department, grab the first carb that catches my eye, then finish the entire thing before checking out. (don’t worry, i pay for it.)

9. things with rhinestones/sequins

10. super nintendo

11. IKEA. everything about it. especially that it inexplicably smells like cinnamon buns

12. dirty, hole-in-the-wall breakfast places. the greasier, the better

sarah is one of my very best friends and i am so happy that she made this list!!
take note at number 6, as sarah and i are DIM SUM MONSTERS.
muahahahahaha

thank you, miss sarah!

street sweets truck!

i started the day off right today with a visit to the
truck!

{it was conveniently parked on 75th and broadway,
giving our friends, the dumpling truck some competition...}

upon recommendation from the mister behind the counter,
i got a
macarella

ok... get this...

it's nutella
sandwiched by
two coconut macaroons!!!

soooo tasty and surprisingly not too sweet.
the macaroons were crispy on the edges and chewy in the middle...
and it was still warm when i got it!
{and it made a great breakfast.. shhh don't tell mum}

everything else looked delicious as well...

they had
pumpkin whoopie pies
and
quiche!

i wanted to eat everything!

come back to the upper west side soon, street sweets!
