i went to flushing and alls i got was this identity crises pastry

it's a cake inside of a loaf of bread. appropriately called a
cake bun
and it's really good.
i'm in bed eating it right now,
and i don't know what is softer: my stuffed penguin friend or this cake bun.

happy sunday!!!

p.s. next up is molly makes a cake bun with red velvet inside challah.
it will be a racial/cultural mut. just like me.

red rooster

the only rooster i ever met was a gay one.
instead of cockadoodle doo
he said any cock will do*
{and at the end of the opera he got sold to the slaughter house, but nevermind that.}
this red rooster, the one that i finally broke my home-cooked meals binge for, is officially the only best reason to go to harlem above 96th.
so many simple foods that i had eaten before were just so much tastier with the aid of the spice master that is marcus samuelsson.
*a finalist for the title of this post
the cornbread was warm and moist and homey!
and honey butter is honey butter,
and the tomato jam was like... the feeling you get when the man at the corner pastry stand gives you a free donut...
and the mac and cheese!
holy comtĂ©.
it was disguised on the menu as mac and collared greens, or something,
and to that end i was a little nervous to see green things contaminating it.
but they just added a new accessory that every mac and cheese could wear!!
also, it may have been the first vegetable i'd eaten in days.
no. weeks.
no. days.
oh hella yeah it was good.
and there were correct breadcrumbs!
breadcrumbs are always a hard thing to get right on mac and cheese
because there's either not enough,
or there's way too many that don't actually end up getting crispy-fied.
this was perfect.
praise cheeses.
the rest were little itsy bitsy plates,
graced with little fishies and duckies and pickleys...
all very good.
oh! and there was this chicken + egg dish that was made with ethiopian spices and it made me reconsider forever swearing off ethiopian food. really, it was a hero of flavor.
mmmmm red rooster.
go to harlem, kids!

red rooster is on 125th and lenox.
reeeeeally close to the 2 and 3 train.

what i'm eating right now is like a corn dog but more ghetto than that

1. put butter, milk, salt, pepper, paprika, and half of the polenta tube in a pan over high high heat
2. mash it up
3. cut up last night's forgotten chicken mango sausage and put it in
4. stir
5. top with tabasco sauce
6. do it again

be mine, CAKE!

since my wee little days,
my fammy has made the same very special almond cake every valentine's day!
it's super almond-y and pink,
and it is the best cake ever.
if i could, i'd eat it every day...
but every day is not valentine's day, so i can't.

here's the recipe:
cake ingredients:
1 tablespoon butter (for pan) 8 oz almond paste 6 eggs - separated 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 teaspoon almond extract a pinch of salt 1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup flour {you can substitute this for 1/2 cup of almond flour,
for those gfgfs and gfbfs {gluten-free girlfriends and gluten-free boyfriends}}
topping ingredients:
  1 1/2 cups whipping cream
1/2 cup powdered sugar
a very very generous splash of amaretto
chocolate hearts, candy hearts, gummy hearts

preheat oven to 350.  butter spring form pan. beat almond paste and egg yolks really well. mix in vanilla and almond extract. beat egg whites and salt in another bowl 'till stiff peaks form, add sugar one tablespoon at a time. fold 1/3 of egg whites into almond paste mixture. gently fold in remaining whites.  combine baking powder and flour in another bowl...gently fold into mixture 2 tablespoons at a time, being careful not to deflate whites. pour into pan, bake until top is lightly browned and a knife inserted into center comes out clean {about 30 minutes}.

for topping, whip cream. blend in powdered sugar. blend in amaretto {drink some amaretto}. cover or pipe over cake just before serving and embellish with candy hearts! if you won't be eating the entire cake right away, do not frost the entire thing-- serve a dollop of whipped cream on the side of each slice and store the rest in the fridge for your noshing purposes.

on going off the deep end

where little lunch components are all pre-packaged, pre-made, or something called a happy hippo.
almond butter packet, little beta carotenes, medium boiled, fromage, kinder happy hippo chocolate creme biscuit, gala, carrot's best friend, whole wheat challah.
not pictured: salt packet, the lean pocket that i plan on eating for dinner
...because when all hours of your life these days are taken up with so many marimbas, vibraphones, the mozart requiem, don juan, burleske, soldier's tale, kurtag, atonal quizzes, #dwg, parler francais, the elliptical, john adams, and facebook:
there is just way not enough time to prepare, a sandwich.
and perhaps what i really need in my lunch sac is a napkin with a note that reads,
dear self,
have a good day, honey.
only nine more weeks till gradiation.
love, self.

i've never read good,
but that was partly because i didn't have the patience to find anything good to read.
who wants to read when you can eat? or watch tv? or play on the jungle gym?
but these days, with streets too slippery for a bicycle,
and an entire world of angry birds that took but three days to beat,
what else is a girl to do on the subway??
{or during the hour of just violas and winds, please, starting at measure three}
so here's what i've read recently:

the curious incident of the dog in the night-time
mark haddon
it might make you think that you're autistic,
or for a temporary time think and talk in a very literal,
and relentlessly detail-oriented manner,
but the cover is a beautiful bright orange, and it is a yummy novel.

this is water
david foster wallace
it's not a book, it's a speech, and here it is
if you're stressed because the costco bag of potstickers that you were on the fence about buying in the first place expired before you could even eat a third of them, or if you missed every single one of the 36 grace notes in your big solo note in rehearsal today, read it.

water for elephants
sara gruen
sigh. so, so, so sweet. and lovable.
and not in that girly way, because one of my friends who is extremely macho and nicknamed squanto had no reservations in telling me that he is in love with this book.

i'm on the market for more books, now.
i tried the poisonwood bible
but now i am only reading it because i feel bad for spending moneys on it.
so i need another one now.

oh, and what is that sandwich you ask?
why it's a grilled gruyere and grammy smith apple on ciabatta sandwich!
served with sierra nevada pale ale mustards, of course.

the little lunchable that could

first it was an overly boozy risotto because i ran out of veggie broth
and had to use an entire bottle of wine to compensate,
then it was eat an entire box of macaroni and cheese alone in a practice room
in between shedding movements of messages of the late r.v. troussova,
and tomorrow it shall be my mustard-y take on the best thing
that ever happened to elementary school lunches {until the bosco stick came along}
i just want to ride my bike.
