& honey

mum and i did apple picking in preparation for making
apple donuts,
apple jelly,
caramel apples,
i don't know if this was allowed, but we ate a few apples fresh from the tree. and they were the yummiest, crispiest, sweetest apples i ever had. if i go to jail for that, it will have been worth it.

good things come in small sticky packages from across the pond

sam is one of those people that knows exactly what you're thinking when it's 4am and you find a stray frozen pizza lurking around on the maazel farm
duh, let's make it and eat it under this blanket fort that we've just made.
and then let's go visit the zonkey
and climb on the hay stacks until daytime.
{sam + me + a fly swatter + a fish bowl, summer 2009}

...such events make sam worthy of a special, special place in my heart. a place that can only be trumped by the gift of a little honey-coated parcel arriving on my desk from cornwall!
and it is no joke. like, i'm eating it with a fork right now, imagining that i'm cornish. the seeds have a really great, meaty texture, and the taste is quite mild {with just a sparkle of hotness}.
i can't wait to pile this on to everything.
thank you, sam!!!!
oh. and as if this wasn't reason enough that sam is killer, he is in
an oompah band that plays ricky martin and michael jackson covers.

 i ain't no lenny
but at least making them was fun.
and at least those two, right-out-of-the-oven bites,
before they turned chewy to the max,
was worth it :)

snappy snappy

donny is teaching me how to take better pictures.
he taught a wonderful little class this weekend at 61 local.
we ate & shot ricotta/honey/pistachio toast, some cheesies, and other tasties.
after the class, i practiced my new skills on the olive oil cake at one girl:
and then on some emergency midnight nachos at fred's:

this punkin bread i made

is in fact more of a pumpkin cake.
 and the ultimate sign that fall is looking us straight in the eye.
{but calling it bread makes me feel less bad about eating 12 pieces in one day}
...and sweet cheeses i love fall
i love sweaters and scarves and not feeling like i should be at an outdoor bar every night. i love beginning the fiscal year, cloves, and the pumpkin water ice at rita's. but you know what is also silly: i love spring, too. and summer, and winter. seasons rock so much! but i also love california, and its year-round warmness. so therefore... everything rocks! except rain.
i digress.
here's the recipe for the above pumpkin bread:
ingredients: 1/2 a can of pumpkin puree + 2 eggs + 1/2 cup vegetable oil + 1/3 cup water + 1 1/2 cups sugar + 1/2 teaspoon grated fresh ginger + 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour + 1 3/4 cups whole wheat flour + 1 teaspoon baking powder + 3/4 teaspoon salt + 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon + 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg + 1/4 teaspoon allspice +  1 cup chocolate chips
clues: mix together the pumpkin + eggs + oil + water + sugar + ginger. in a separate bowl, mix together the rest of the ingredients. combine the two. bake in a greased 7 x 3 loaf pan at 350 for 50ish minutes.

risotto for fall

{and ways i'm turning into my mum}
risotto is never a summer dish in my fammy.
it'll heat up the kitchen! you don't want to stand over a hot stove for that long in this weather.
says mum.
so yesterday, on the first day of fall, i made risotto!
mizuna + tomatoes + rice milk + beer + veggie broth + so much garlic
and also yesterday: i found a fourth grey hair.
i am 22 and totally greying. just like mum did. more do i paint my finger nails because "they just chip in a day or two" {that, a direct mum quote}
and when the clock strikes any hour that's really early in the morning, i am up, wide awake, doing something productive.
 i also find myself cringing at the site of anything plastic in the kitchen that isn't tupperware. sorry, trusty hot water boiler.
before i know it i'll be looking all over for my reading glasses that are on my head, and calling my future offspring every five minutes to tell them about the fresh herbs from the garden.
ahh, but it's ok. my guy friends think that mum is hot.

cure me, smoke me, eat my belly!

the older brothers of my friends have historically been good for things like hogging the nintendo 64, burning green army men, and being boring spy victims. but i think i've hit the jackpot with jeremy: his brother makes bacon. and is a cook, most recently at torrisi. last night he made a tasting for me and maria and jeremy {a.k.a. the luckiest people on earth}. it was:
brûléed maple bacon amuse-bouche
arugula salad bacon dressing
bacon steak an egg + purple potatoes + the best broccoli i ever had
cocoa cured bacon ciabatta bread pudding + peachies + smoked cocoa nibs
99% cocoa chocolate bar just cause
[to drink: the red that gg got me for my recital]
...and during it, we discussed how good fat is for you.
and how life is too short to not eat chocolate & bacon many, many times a day.
{it was sort of like a role-play}
{{but a yummy one}}
i wish jeremy and brother didn't live so far uptown so i could come over for dinner every day.
but then again maybe the bike ride there and back is what will keep me fitting into my jeans...

brooklyn star

last night i had a yummy dinner
with an amazing group of people
in a beautiful and spacious and acoustically friendly room.
it was so joyful!
too often in restaurants in this city, i go bonkers over feeling like my personal space bubble has been popped or like i have to yell to be heard...
and in those cases, i might as well just have a plate of poo in front of me.
but last night, it was like being back home, where elbow room exists and conversation quality can reach a good height.
oh it was so great.
and the food was wonderful, too!
when donny said fried chicken dinner i thought better bike a million miles this week but with all of the delicious sweet/sour pickles, green beans {which may have been soaked in aminal fat?} and watermelons to even out the heaviness of the mac and cheese, cornbread, and chickens,
i felt like a good $500,000 bucks afterwards.
it's experience meals like these that fill my happy bank and then some.

fig newtons

{and fig newtons with nutella}

lance brought in office figs last week.
and i said, "lance, you have a thing for figs."
and he said, "yeah."
so i made office fig newtons.
i used this recipe,
which combines my recent ventures in jam with a basic-ish orangey sugar cookie. it isn't the dark brown cake-y cookie in a real fig newton that makes you feel like you're doing good by eating whole wheat or whatever. but it's good.
and they're good.
and naturally, one third of them are spiked with nutella.
how is that for getting figgy with it?

scarves + schnitzels

i'm not actually convinced that fall is here for good yet.
it came quite abruptly, no?
either way, i acted like fall this weekend.
i put on my big fat scarf and rode around town...
i swung by the hester street fair to eat a sweet onion schnitzel,
made a mental note to make punkin bread this week,
and observed the leaves for signs of color-changing. none yet!

and then i rode off to long island city for my first trip to p.s. 1,
which was disappointing because i actually think that
i'm one of those dumb people who the smart visual art people
look down upon for not understanding their work.
so i rode to greenpoint and ate a peter pan donut...
and then made some art of my own
with wood shapes and things i found on the ground.
i also watered some plants,
ate a pancake,
and played around with silly camera settings...
and did a very unfall thing by way of
trying a million zillion flavors of frozen yogurt at sixteen handles.
it was pretty much the perfect weekend.
except for when i had to cough every five seconds during a 30 minute babbitt piece at greg's recital. which is a lot of having to cough, and a lot of fearing to be that person that coughs during the babbitt.
but who needs cough drops when you have the corner taco truck.

congratulations, donny!!

last night, i went to the opening of donny's exhibit
of behind-the-scenes food photos
he is such a rockstar and his photos are so pretty.
{and the beer + pretzel caramels floating around were the perfect touch}

in the morningtime

the sufjan stevens station is on, just medium volume. wake not, my roommate! my cup of red velvet tea is a quarter full, and i just read a bit of encyclopedia of an ordinary life, a book that mum sent me in a little care package this week. i paused the readingtime to discuss this time, my favorite time: morningtime. it is before everyone in my world has woken up, or at least before everyone in my world thinks that i have woken up.
at camp i had a ritual of waking up exactly 55 minutes before reveille. it was to go on my runs, on the treadmill, in the gym, but always i'd walk extra slowly to the gym to savor that comforttime of... quiet before the unknown? my only least favorite part of this time was the dew on the grass-- but such is a necessity for that scene.
[present] here i am, before i've made my bed, sitting at my vanity, about to finish this cup of tea and wanting to describe this, but-- hearing the footsteps in my building are signaling the end. or the beginning.
happy day, everyone!

when i was a wee one...

i had a wicked collection of marzipan pigs
and an extensive knowledge of benches.
{a favorite hobby was testing out every single one that i found}
other obsessions included tupperware,
spelling the word zucchini,
and substituting my middle name for trapezoid
{it's rebecca}
my goals in life were to be a mathematician and to drive a limo.
i had a lisp.
i had a bowl cut.
and no intention of ever eating jellyfish.

{what were you like when you were a wee one?}

Thursday, September 15, 2011

{my silly mum! who has a wicked mac and cheese recipe} something i wish i observed more often.
on fridays i could come home from work,
prepare a yummy meal,
then have all of my humans over for yummies, laughings, & good conversation.
it would last well into the nighttime, but time wouldn't exist.
on saturdays, i'd go for a walk,
or read some cookbooks.
perhaps i'd even take a nap.
maybe it'll happen... oh just maybe,
 when my list of museums and markets to go to on a saturday dwindles.
anyways. yesterday, i had a piece posted on the forward's blog about my favorite shabbats {which were at camp} go read it!

lovers reunited

a summer without the schnitzel truck
is like anything without mustard.
it is a little scary and i never want to do it again.
we finally reunited yesterday and i got something newish:
eggplant schnitzel
with spicy mayo
and we embraced each other i ate it on the high line.
which was perfect, because the high line has great benches, and enough of them*
*one day i'll discuss my extensive knowledge of benches, because i have one.
my mom can attest to it.
and can i confess something? before that i'd never had eggplant.
well, maybe i have and it was mixed with something and i just didn't know it.
but this was the first time i ordered an eggplant-focused thing
and it was so great!
and not just because animal babies weren't killed in the process,
but also because it had a sweet yummy taste and a new texture i've never before met in a schnitzel.
schnitzel truck, i missed you so much omg

p.s. on the subject of schnitzel {story of my life}: here is a little piece i wrote about a new israeli schnitzel place that is launching this weekend

french toast smoothie

{ok tell me if this sounds gross}
my breakfasts as of late are in smoothie form.
i roll out of bed, stand in my kitchen, and just put whatever looks good into the magic bullet blender cup.
it's usually frozen strawbees, bluebees, greek yogurt, cocoa powder...
if i'm feeling like a badass i put some jiff or almond syrup in.
then i blender it all up.
and while it's blendering i look for whatever bready-type thing is lying around.
last week it was cornbread, today it was leftover french toast.
and then i break it up into little pieces and throw it on top.
it's kind of like a chocolate cake shake, but less fat butt-enducing.
try it.

is it halloween yet?

{molly the mallet, circa 2006}

this morning i am listening to an album called
france and french cafe music
and brainstorming halloween costume ideas.
is it too early?
i'm thinking kale this year. you know, to demonstrate my 99% vegetarianism.

Saturday, September 10, 2011

it's an eat-nothing-but-an-entire-batch-of-peanut-butter-blondies-that-i-made-at-2am kind of day?

but they were really good and they had colorful jimmies and charleston chews on top. i'd show you a picture, but they're in my belly. which is hurty.

Friday, September 9, 2011

when i get emo it's trying to make pictures of airplane food look hipster that kind of makes things better

no one but maria came to my macaroni and cheese party tonight.
more for us.
oh barf.

-no :-(

on the bright side, it is casual friday. i'll be in green pants.

slow down and eat some mac and cheese

on the facebook feed of life:
my-aged people are married.
 younger people, people born in the 90s, are engaged.
people are winning big, grand orchestra jobs.
and my mother is a grandma {to a dog, but still}.
last night i donned purple juicy velour pants
and ate eight kinds of macaroni and cheese.
is that immature?
am i too old to have a penguin collection and sock monkey sheets?
should my birthday cake-flavored sparkly lipgloss be tossed?
should i dye my gray strand of hair?
what is this insanity that is growing up and having a job.
what is happening.

{that picture is from dumont burger, november 2009}

breakfast for dinner

lentil sausage pigs in sourdough buttermilk vanilla blankets... with brown sugar strawbee {juices}
my quest for turning all meat things into lentil/almond/egg things continues.
when i was a wee one, i'd eat those pig in a blanket things that came on a stick and that looked like corn dogs. and that you could nevvver quite microwave right, for either the middle was still frozen or the outside was overcooked. but they were still really good and fun and you could eat them on the school bus.
...that on-a-stick thing was what i was going for, but the lentil sausage had the consistency of what happens when you eat too many sunchokes in a day. so i just made poo-shaped lentil sausage logs, and they were really good.
lentil breakfast sausage: {mix together} ground cooked lentils + almond flour + white flour + eggs + salt + pepper + allspice + nutmeg + sage + thyme + brown sugar + cayenne. form poo shapes, cook in olive oil.

happy things for this gloomysome tuesday morning

{this photo i found from my silly trip to new haven last year}
that there is just enough space to do a sun salutation in my room
cocoa powder in my smoothies
rollerball pens
making my bed
the amount of cheese that is in my refrigerator right now
the unknown {re: halloween costumes}
being complimented on my posture yesterday
the people at the lomography store in the village. they so nice.
homemade salted vanilla caramels
big monstrous hugs!
running into home friends so far from home, like the bowery
stoop's new pup, audrey hepburn
