sunday party

juilliard and i, like the city and i, have always love/hated each other
{this is less true now that i'm not a student there}
but when sunday night parties happen that are people running around holding
violins and bassoons, reading ives and stravinsky and poetry and original works,
i love love love love juilliard and the people that it shoots out, projectile-y.
it makes me feel like i'm in the party scene in amadeus.
and i don't want it to end.
unless it involves fried chicken in inwood.

punch brothers

i took myself on a date to see punch brothers last night.
i ate extra garlic at dinner, arrived 20 minutes late,
and didn't have to worry about making dumb conversation or anything.
i'm so pathetic, i know. it was so lovely.
and the concert was-- once i got over the shock of how little a banjo
player's fingers move and how much chris thile moves-- great.
however, i still want to know who chris thile wants not to get married without him.
p.s. my concert breath was horrific.
but that is the last thing you worry about when you take yourself on a date.

bike weather meta-ness

mr. chin twitter called me sartorial and i liked it.
when i was sketched last week and then the sketch was deleted, i became very mad.
"the most low maintenance thing i ever did" still cost $130.
27 days until my birthday.

these days

it is warm enough for outside pizza nights.
a new dinner table, which was christened with yummies from kashkaval,
makes me smile so hard that i think my face will fall off.
i have been enjoying ramps, salmon rillettes, and serial music with this human.
grom is the best medication for my poor sore throat. almond cookie candle, edith piaf, and the occasional bit of poetry plopped in my inbox
make the world go round.

morning toast.

caramelized onion + fig jam + brie
{the toast that saved me from that nasty feeling of waking from a nasty dream}
in my old age i've finally learned not to stay in bed and attempt to sleep off any bad feelings,
but rather to get up and do something. anything. run, drink coffee, talk to mum,
photograph something arbitrary. this rainy morning it was exchange a few online words with stoop
and caramelize onions to put atop yesterday's dinner baguette.
it was, i'd say, as successful as can be.

happy friday, everybody!
i've been so spoiled with lou malnati's for my last two pizza nights.
tonight, i return to the new york pizza night. {with rob {!!!} as a pregame to george's graduation recital {!!!}}. perhaps we will dine at francesco's, where they know me by name, or at two boots, where rumor has it they're giving away free big lebowski slices.
{we'll discuss chicago pizza vs. new york pizza some other time.}

lucky burger, apparently

{lucky's famous burgers. lower east side. circa january.}
some nights are only best remembered by a lost {and months later, found} memory card
those nights were likely gnarly and outrageous.
calories from those nights don't count one bit.

a good apple

{the midwest young artists annual gala}
daddy, teresa, stoop, me, johnswik
photo credit: my six-year-old sister. look at that. annie leibovitz, watch out.
stoop does her hairs.
a heavily processed potential for a holiday photo/why daddy should take raw pictures
stoop and johnswik get pouty!
i creep in stoop's room.
daddy get's an award!
dr. niles crane, ladies and germs!
midwest young artists is one big big reason why i play music. i grew up in the mya orchestra and percussion ensemble, and i can't imagine a better way to have spent my saturdays throughout junior high and high school than rehearsing with these ensembles. performing beethoven 9 in orchestra hall, competing in fischoff nearly every year, forming some of my closest friendships, and developing a deep affection for domino's pizza are just a few of the awesome things that became of my time in mya.
on saturday morning, i tagged along with my dad to rehearsal and filled in for the three missing percussionists. and it was by far one of the highlights of my week. more of a highlight than meeting niles crane from frasier {no offense, david}. playing in that beautiful sunny room in the old jail building with dr. d as the conductor, daddy as soloist...
i couldn't shake that feeling of oh, yes, this is why i love playing so much.
that night, we got all fancy schmancy and sipped cocktails and ate devils on horseback and bid in a live auction and enjoyed shostakovich. pops got an award and it was ever so sweet!
it was the loveliest of times, it was one of my favorite of times.

home {again}

for the second weekend in a row, i flew home.
and it was bliss.
bliss because i got to see my dad accept an award for his work with my old youth orchestra,
bliss because, as much as i love my life in new york, every day i think about how much better it would be if i could see my family without having to get on a plane.
every weekend i could do exactly what i did this weekend...
i could have lazy mornings in the kitchen reading cookbooks while mum makes crepes,
we could make chocolate rugelach whenever we please,
pops and i could take zumba classes {and i would die watching him}.
stoop and i could curl our hairs while we sip mimosas,
and i'd sit with mia while she practiced the piano.
{this weekend. oh it was perfect.}

interview: audrey bananarama

meet audrey, my niece dog.
stoopie and johnswik acquired her some months back and since then i haven't seen stoopie without her.
{this is the girl that didn't like dogs until audrey came around.}
audrey is pretty magical. she likes typical dog things, is very ladylike, and has rathercomplex feelings.
thankfully, stoopie served as an excellent translator for this interview:
my name is yeh: welcome, audrey!
audrey: oh, thank you! i'm a little bit nervous. this is my first interview since the surgery.
m: oh, no worries on that. just relax. let's begin with some politics... who are you going to vote for?
a: oprah
m: what's your favorite toy?
a: my squishy pear
m: what's your favorite way to dine?
a: al fresco
m: tell us about your love life.
a: daddy says i'm too young to date.
m: what do you want to be when you grow up?
a: a visual merchandiser for saks.
m: what are your favorite television programs?
a: law and order svu, 2 stupid dogs, and anything that has to do with fashion.
m: where is your bellybutton?
a: i have six of them.
m: excellent. thanks, niece.
a: thank you very much, aunt molly!

hot cross buns

is it wrong to wake up on a hangover from manischewitz to the smell of freshly baked hot cross buns?
i mean whatever, there was a multicolored easter egg on the seder plate.

Sunday, April 8, 2012

the little seder that could.

an orange on our plate.
all set!
jonswik's seder number two.
edamame hoe-moose, guacamole hoe-moose. slutty mooses.
stoopie and the herb.
brisket, egg, and cheese*
*i know
mummy and the spinach!
no spanx.
almond butter cookies, macaroons, boozy wine marshmallows, marshy cookies.
 i've had some wonderful seders in new york these past few years. {including this simply absurd one.}
but being at home for the first passover in a while,
and getting to gossip and sip vodka with stoopie,
and not being afraid to eat everything on the seder plate out of order whenever i want...
oh yes, there is something special about that.
my contributions to our feast were almond butter cookies, macaroons, and homemade marshmallows that mum insisted on spiking with manischewitz. but i basked in the yumminess of roasted brussels sprouts with walnuts, cranberries, and mustard vinaigrette, a few bites of brisket, and marshy's fluffy matzoh balls in roasted vegetable broth...
this morning, i woke up to the smell of hot cross buns rising. and now mum is making matzoh brei.
oh, the joys and sillyness of being home!

a soprano.
up near grant's tomb, charlotte and i talked contemporary vocal music and played with light
before engaging in kara-age and tonkatsu domination at jin ramen, in harlem.
