morning meatballs


anything + egg + cheese makes it a breakfast food, right?
i've recently found myself spending large numbers of hours with a human who has a very, how shall we say, nightmare of a schedule when it comes to meal times. it includes very long shifts and overnight shifts...bloody shifts... it oft leaves me in the dark when planning meals. is it breakfast if he wakes up at 6pm to start his work day? would he like a beer with that 7am bagel? i normally require breakfast food to break the eating seal, even if i wake up in the afternoon. but i'm not so sure this human is the same, he seems to just eat whatever i put in front of him. so yesterday and today i prepared meatballs, one was a dinner way, one was a breakfast way. they were both my dinner. they were both his breakfast. they were inspired by a recent little trip to the meatball shop.

turkey meatballs + red sauce
{for the meatballs}
1 tbs olive oil
1 1/4 pounds ground turkey
a heaping 1/2 cup of ricotta
1 large egg
a heaping 1/2 cup of breadcrumbs
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp crushed red pepper
{for the sauce}
3 tbs olive oil
1/2 onion, diced
1/2 tsp oregano
2 garlic cloves, chopped
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp crushed red pepper
1 tbs tomato paste
1 28-oz can of whole plum tomatoes + their liquid
1/2 tsp white sugar
a few pinches of cinnamon
{for breakfast}
angel hair pasta
a healthy plop of ricotta 
a sunny side up egg
salt + pepper + olive oil to taste
{for dinner}
focaccia or slider rolls 
a salad
booze
{meatball clues}
preheat oven to 450, coat a pan with the olive oil, set the pan aside. combine the rest of the ingredients. make 1 1/2 inch balls and line them up snuggly on the pan. bake for 20 minutes. make the sauce while they're baking.
{sauce clues}
in a large pot over medium high heat, cook the olive oil + onion + oregano + garlic + salt + black pepper + crushed red pepper until the onion becomes soft, about 10 minutes.
add the tomato paste and cook, stirring often, for 5 minutes.
add the tomatoes + sugar + cinnamon and stir until the sauce boils. reduce to a simmer and cover, stirring occasionally. once the meatballs are done roasting, add them to the sauce and keep them over the heat until you're ready to serve them.

ad lib toppings or ways to eat them. slider-izing them with focaccia is yummy. or, stir some ricotta and olive oil into a bowl of hot angel hair, top with the balls and an egg, and you've got a really filling excuse for a 6pm breakfast.

instead i am taking a huevo torta//#whatshouldwecallme conservatory break from packing my entire apartment. packing is the worst. i'd rather eat a banana. mark my word, i'm never moving again unless it involves telepathically transporting my cotton candy machine, multiple fondue pots, and antique pyrex collection. and girl, i haven't even started on the mustards. the horror. luckily the radical face internet radio station is delivering exactly what i want. 
unluckily, i think it's time to carry on packing.

gnarly buttons.


for my birthday getup, i doctored up this american apparel dress with
buttons that i found at my new favorite place on the east side,
tender buttons. the shop sells just about every single kind of button
that you didn't think existed. it makes me have more faith that a
mustard shop can survive. four of the buttons that i got for my dress
are from the 1950s and they illustrate "sing a song of sixpence," and
the fifth button is a gold one made in france that is pierrot lunaire!
i am so smitten with my finds. all on one dress, you'll find my loves
of pie, rhymes, princesses, birds, song, and atonal sad clown creeps!

stream of consciousness day


 
to ring in my birthday, rob and maria and i engaged in stream of consciousness day: a 24-hour piece of performance art centered on doing whatever we want, when we want it. obviously there's not much planning to be done aside from taking a vacation day from work and mentally preparing yourself for the possibility that your stream of consciousness could lead you to a tattoo parlor or the lunchable aisle of the grocery store or, heaven forbid, staten island. luckily our streams didn't lead us to do any permanent damage. i was mostly looking to eat as many breakfast sandwiches as possible, maria and i got massages and our nails did, and rob went to the party store to buy those absurd clown glasses for us. we ate cake balls and nougats and... we just didn't hold back when it came to eating and drinking. the day ended with sangria and bacon cheeseburgers on the hudson as the sun set, some really strong coconut cake at good enough to eat, and belly aches that carried on into the next day. hehe, oops.

a few last thoughts as a 22-year-old


tonight i am ringing in my birthday with a few almond candles, a glass of amaretto, and a corn dog. das lied is playing as a prelude to the annual adagietto. fratres played all day. 
i am rather excited to close out 22, tie a nice little bow on it, and store it in the bank as one of my better, sillier, funner years. this whole not being in school thing is really fantastic. i feel a little bit like a geezer, a little bit amaretto-y. let me tell you the things i think i learned during my year of being 22:
{1} a croissant or six is totally ok if you're pms-ing. and totally ok if you're not pms-ing.
{2} when in doubt, clean your room, cook something, or go on a bike ride. do not be still.
{3} a midnight nacho-eating-molly is a happy molly, so is a molly who bikes 25 miles in a day.
{4} trader joe's corn dogs and kimchi fried rice are dirty good.
{5} hong kong is the love of my life. 
{6} so is a well-roasted brussels sprout.
{7} the difference between i wanna go, i should go, i'll feel like butt if i go, i'll feel great if i go. 
{8} the art of vibe. {actually i'm still working on this one.}
{9} that it's ok to be unsure about nearly everything. what am i saying, i'm still working on this one too.
perhaps 23-year-old molly will learn how to: not bite nails, make choices more easily, and prepare a mean soufflé. perhaps she'll get a tattoo piercing, perhaps she'll love mushrooms. 
it's nearly adagietto time.

my ginger curry milkshake brings all of the manhattanites to the nethermead.


 i was a big gay girl at googa mooga yesterday and it was a total blast!!
do you think becoming a career milkshake wench would be a good use of my music degree?
 what was the opposite of a blast was emerging from the tent after my shift in need of 
some proper protein and seeing nothing but lines. oy vay!
 maria saved my life with a little porchetta sandwich and a blue ribbon chicken wing. and then i indulged in a mini coconut popsicle before booking it to the greenmarket for some cider and snackees so that i wouldn't fall over on the twelve mile bike ride home.
but, like, i don't know what i was expecting. crowds like this...
make me want to assume the fetal position, cover my ears and eyes, and click my red shoes, wishing to be back in bed again. it was like one of those nightmares where you're chasing the big man made of mac and cheese and you want to eat him but he's juusssttt out of reach. 
so close yet so far. so starving. it's pancake time.

bye bye, colorful apartment


remember three years ago when i decided that it would be really cool to paint each room in my apartment a different, extremely bright color? probably not... but i did. and it has been mildly worth it, if only for fulfilling my dream of having a red door and being able to write silly messages on the chalkboard paint in the bathroom. this week i am working on painting over it all with the plainest old white you ever saw. it's so sad and it bores me to death, but it will all be worth it in the fall when i get to explore a new neighborhood and make my mark on a new kitchen.

wd~50

the sideburns are real,
my belly is full,
and come on, those bathrooms are not that confusing.
a very handsome human took me to wd~50 for my birthday. {is today your birthday?! said my poor mum that was amnesia-ridden for 24 hours* no, mum, it's an early present}
*true story. don't ask unless you have a cookie.
our reservation simply happened to be within the first few days of the new tasting menu. when i discovered this my initial sad eggs benedict-less reaction was masked by how much the 12-year-old in me loves being first in line. it was so new that a few little stumbles in the wine pairing led to extra boozies for us! oh man it was boozy. ok here are my pictures:
{1} like a little cloud of flavor, i conquered this fish. it was tasty enough and the texture was fleeting enough to make a fish lover from a h8er.
{2} my third time ever eating lobster and it was a charm! also, are grapes in style?
{3} mmm. phoking good. all dark and meaty and stuff.
{4} a yoke that has been cured in salt and sugar for six hours, it thickens. it is so cool! it makes slow poached as passé as gauchos.
{5} brotha had me at mustard biscuit. light and airy solid mustard. oh em jazzle. and that meat, it was soft and buttery. oh i did love this one.
{6} the crab was actually shredded, not with a little face :-(. i just wanted to draw a little face. this toast was really yummy, it was super sweet and refreshing.
{7} a baby fried green tomato! for joy. it was nice to have that comforting accompaniment to break my sole virginity. the flavors of this one, with the black licorice, made me feel really hip and highbrow.
{8} you know what sweetbreads are, right? uhh... they're-- shut up don't say it. i didn't finish this one.
{9} perhaps this was my favorite. jam and meat are probably one of the more powerful couples, flavor-wise. and anything with spaetzle is immediately my bff.
{10} ok, things got super boozy around this time and i recall thinking this would be a crème brûlée thing and then cracking open a shell and finding ice cream and handsome man saying "cuuuuucumber."
{11} what happens when dr. dufresne mates cotton candy with ice cream. 
{12} have you ever poked your finger into what you thought would be a warm and toasty marshmallow only to find that it is in fact ice cream? i highly recommend it. i also highly recommend bringing some black currant jam on your next camping trip.

i would like to fist pump, eat graham crackers and have nap time whenever i want, fart, pick my nose, spend ungodly amounts of money, go to bed without brushing my teeth, eat gummy bears, nacho cheese, and twelve boxes of eggos, watch rom coms, become crunchy, say the f word on the internet a lot, bite my nails, get "oh em jazzle" tattooed on my forehead, get caught listening to britney spears, not do laundry ever, and have bad breath without any consequences. k thanks bye.

where i write from


when i read a thing on the internet i often wonder about the state of the writer when he or she wrote it. 

i imagine donny or robyn sitting at a kitchen table in the middle of the night with some really yummy snack that may or may not have been free,

meg or camilla in really stylish casual clothes in a beautiful sunny living room with a cup of tea,

nico on a plane hunched over and projectile-y writing because there is so much to say,

amanda ameer slightly drunk in an old leather chair with a glass of chardonnay or whatevs and laughing the entire time,

will in a desk chair at a clean desk with notes, an outline, google, his thinking cap, and a cup of water.

above is where i write from. in my bedroom, it is half desk/half vanity and it is where all sorts of thoughts and things run around my person. i usually write first thing in the morning with a cup of black coffee, non-ideal posture, and morning music playing {sometimes i get too excited and can't wait to write everything down so i forget the music and coffee}. this morning it was my mid-may playlist. depending on when the inspiration strikes me, i could be fully dressed and ready for the day, i could be just out of the shower and still in a robe, i could be alternating mascara and blush with photo editing and word barfing and gchatting with mum. occasionally i write at night, at which point i pump up da steve reich or edith piaf and pour some red velvet tea or wild tea vodka or both. i try to keep it luxurious.

getting real

can we talk about how grossly inappropriate my food habits are sometimes? and how eating pretty and delicious and totally highbrow food is absolutely not my norm? i mean, ok, i guess it makes sense why it sometimes appears this way. i absolutely spend energy over making pretty food prettier and i enjoy eating and telling. but it's time i began admitting the rest... for example, my daytime food the past two days: a pack of trader joe's crumpets that sat on my desk until one by one i microwaved them all {22 seconds on high yields the best results, i found} and then used them as vestibules for hummus or peanut butter or sometimes both at the same time. you know how they say desks often have more bacteria than a toilet seat? i'm convinced mine has more bacteria than a pukey port-o-potty at like bonnaroo. my dinner last night was a mixing bowl filled with scorched chow mein noodles that were probably left in my cabinet from two roommates ago, topped with a spoon of peanut butter and soy sauce. and sriracha. like, wtf, it was so good, and then i ate it all and wanted to die i was so ashamed. as an appetizer i discarded the innards of these gross veggie steamed buns that had been frozen for probably decades and then only ate the doughy part. oy! none of this is my fault, sometimes i get too hungry to make decisions so i make bad ones. that is all.
