faraway rockaway

slightly earlier than what one would call "just before sunrise," i sat alone in my kitchen with an iced coffee and the ann romney speech
a noise came: outside my door, in the pitch black, there was an invitation to bike to the coast. we were to leave at that very moment.
ok. absolutely.
we biked into the day, biked biked biked, over the bridges/past the woods/towards the sun, to a beach with surfers and seagulls and the perfect spot for fruits and croissants.
32 miles and a peanut butter m & m emergency later, i emptied the sand from my shoes and dashed to work.
it was one of the more perfect mornings, i'd say.

nicholas ford hagen & robert leonardo knopper

until further notice: "nick & nop"
for the past four days one song has played on repeat in my head and for the first time since my lovefest with "the trapeze swinger," i don't mind. i sing it in the shower and while i'm riding my bike down the river... and on the subway and while i'm fixing dinner.
it is nicholas ford hagen's "the one is you."
it wouldn't be a far stretch to say that i'd get married just so this could accompany my first dance. {alas, marrying apartments is illegal still.}
and if that's not enough, rob recently joined nick as his cajón accompanist. they made their debut last weekend at a bike shop that is also a brewery and i'd say it marked a yummy start. so yummy that i couldn't help having them over for some goat cheese and a rooftop photo shoot.
so go have a listen because they're wonderful and one day they will be famouser.

the problem with being in love with my new apartment is that there are just too many fantastic looking restaurants that i can't be arsed to try on account of why shouldn't i stay in my sunny kitchen all day and cook all of the things that pass through my stream of consciousness? corn muffins with bacon and apples for donny and mo? ok. almond chocolate meringues? yes. brunch for craig? oh yes absolutely omg yes craig was in town and we ate eggs and split a pumpkin whoopie pie.

and then yesterday a thought arouse that was something along the lines of: i am going to be single for as long as i live in this apartment because with the amount that i love this place, how can i possibly love another thing, such as a human being?

perhaps this is what we call "taking this too far."

happy beans

{from the governor's island 20s party. some people didn't get the memo to dress-up.}

yesterday i inched closer to coming to terms with the fact that many of my close friends are soon moving or have recently moved away from the city. and that brooklyn is quite far from many of those that are left. it was a sad day and there were lots of frowns.

so today i will begin the day with a happy list.

1. the dharma at big sur
2. perhaps a matzoh taste test party is in my future
3. through the grapevine i heard: "i just want to eat cake and eggs with molly yeh, you know?" yes. i will absolutely eat cake and eggs with you.
4. tomato season
5. an opera i am very much looking forward to performing this fall is on this list, right above a concert that my pops is playing.
6. very special people will be visiting town this weekend!
7. donny gave me a muffin tin and i intend to soon make lemon poppyseed muffins.
8. bike rides
9. my new heroes of the torah drinking glasses
10. lost in the trees garden
11. butter dish shopping

i live in brooklyn now

{a brooklyn pie, a brooklyn biscuit, a perfect brooklyn breakfast}

in the middle of my summer travels i, for a quick second, returned to the city slightly homeless and determined to find the perfect little dwelling in my favorite outer borough. i didn't. i found the perfect large dwelling {!!} and it only took two emotional breakdowns and one box of frozen ikea rösti.

glorious is an understatement. i want to puke in excitement. it's the perfect venue for tea parties and brunch parties and dare i say it midnight dinners.

everything is a short bike ride away. my kitchen has enough counter space to make five pies at once. i'm even thinking about joining a food co-op!!

what do we think when we sign leases on tiny upper side closets?

and i can't wait to make this finally happen.

la jolla

{or rather, an endsummer manifesto}

order all the things animal style
extra animal style
drink beers with grandma
cash in on those tacos
do not let the jellyfish scare you
when people tell you you're tall, tell them they're short
yes, pineapple belongs on that black bean burger
yes, you should definitely go under the limbo bar
no, tokyo string quartet, you should not retire
salad can be a meal if there are marrow bones involved.
more often, steak should be eaten poolside at midnight.

outside amsterdam

in about the time it would take to bike from harlem to park slope, rob and i biked from amsterdam to a little windmill village, zaanse schans. what a cute little place! like the real life version of it's a small world, only better because zaanse schans has a windmill that makes mustard. {see the excitement in the fourth photo?} immediately when i saw it my dream to have a backyard chicken coop and tree house transformed into a dream to have a backyard mustard windmill. who needs anything else when you have a mustard windmill.
such magic.
rob and i really couldn't get enough of the whole countryside thing, so a few days later we took a little tour to edam-volendam and ate pancakes by the water and learned how wooden shoes are made. what do you think the chances are of wooden shoes becoming super trendy? should we make it happen?

if amsterdam were a person, i think perhaps she would be that very pretty, well-dressed human who is nice to just about everyone. who is easy to talk to, enjoys throwing gatherings, and probably has a family farm in connecticut that dates back many generations {but you're really not quite sure}. sometimes you wish she'd tell you what she really thought or say the f word. other times you are so very grateful for the quaintness of her company.
food in amsterdam i ate and loved.
fries at vleminckx
herring sandwich at rob wigboldis vishandel
krokets at febo
pâté + cherry beer at die zotte
ice cream at ijscuypje
bitterballen at café de engelbewaarder
everything at café de koe
gevulde koeken {almond paste cookies!!} everywhere

the thing with spending just shy of five hours in a country is that your tolerance for embarrassment is a bit on the high side. as in, who cares if you fancy eating an eccles cake in the style of a monster? you're leaving the country soon! which is exactly what i did at the brussels train station in waiting for my train to amsterdam. i covered myself in eccles cake crumbs before practicing bench top food styling, took a lot of pictures of my new shoes, made friends with the male nurse who was returning home to rotterdam from a weekend spent swimming in salt water pools with his girlfriend who studies science in brussels... also at one point i gazed into the eyes of one liege waffle that sat in the vending machine wanting so badly for me to eat it. molly, you must eat a belgian waffle in belgium, you must. alas, homegirl only had pounds and no euros.
