RECIPE: SRIRACHA CHEEZ-ITS

once upon a vending machine, cheez-its were my jump off whenever some magical force of nature prevented me from choosing the healthier pretzel option because cheez-its are, hands down, the pimped out drug lord of the vending machine. which is my prudish attempt at drawing a parallel between these and crack. at one point last year i used some absurdly delicious old chatham cheese to make cheez-its, and just today i revisited this recipe in my quest to find something savory to sell at the new music bake sale

i've about eaten the entire batch today and i don't feel bad about it.

actually yes i do.

but it was worth it.

THIS TIME LAST YEAR

one year and one day ago today, mum and i roamed the city eating the best sandwiches and english muffins we could find. it was a wonderful and happy day. i sure am due for a visit home.

MOCHI IN THE MORNING

lately i've been experiencing that annual february feeling of can it please be time for spring or at least a tropical vacation? and since the closest thing to that vacation is a trip home in a month for passover and stoopie's bachelorette party, i decided that the next best option to cure the winter blues would be to paint my nails orange and test recipes for the new music bake sale via making mochi while watching girls. it was a morning not unlike any other. and it yielded really gooey and sticky {albeit yummy} results.

i used this for the mochi
and filled them with a spoonful
of peanut butter and jelly.
easy peasy.

WEEKEND WARRIORS

during the weekend we were tourists in our own city. or, manhattan, if i can call it mine anymore. it happened after a dream where i gave up my big brooklyn apartment for a tiny manhattan thing. i woke up half scared and half excited at the feeling of living in a treehouse above the big city, if only in a dream. so away we rode, for coffee with rob in his midtown high rise and to urbanly explore all over central park and the upper west side. one bag of kale chips and one augustus saint-gaudens statue later my manhattan quota was met and it was time to head home.

MY NAME IS ______

usually when you see someone pee on stage every day for a couple of weeks you're like oh i'm going to remember that girl as the girl who peed on stage. but not with lauren worsham. her mad singing skillz are mad enough to conquer any sort of pee-related reputation and turn it into a real awesome one. we met during dog days {where she totally killed it} and this week she is performing in an 80s-style turn of the screw at b.a.m. check it out everyone, i bet it is going to be tiiiight {also krescendo is right near b.a.m. so eat garlic knots and then go see some screw}.

LATELY...

-i've been craving zoog disney and a handi-snack.
-my meringue making skills have been elementary and embarrassing. it appears a successful/articulate enough meringue-for-dummies recipe is impossible and i think i should hire a personal meringue tutor. anybody?
-eggboy has decided that if he ever makes an oscar-nominated movie, employing the pope for his buzz race campaign would yield success.
-we've been really enjoying this lentil soup with sausage, chard, and garlic with kale instead of chard though because i haven't yet invited a chard into my home.
-our tea bar has been growing growing, mainly with oolong and chamomile from the lovely blue lady tea shop.
-peanut butter goes in errrrything. and i've been rather curious about trying pb2... {so that i can eat an entire batch of peanut butter blondies and feel less barfy?}
-i've been testing recipes for the new music bake sale!
-my subway rides have been making me want to move to a driving town where the only bad smells during my commute will be produced by me and the only weirdees yelling weird things during my commute will happen through the radio.
-can we skip purim and go straight to passover?
-on weekends i go to costco, at night i clean the kitchen: i am old people. and i'm kind of enjoying it.

CHOCOLATE O'CLOCK

my favorite little ritual: every afternoon, whenever i want, i eat one piece of dark chocolate. it's called chocolate o'clock. i make sure i have plenty of chocolate at all times in case i have visitors during chocolate o’clock or in case if by some time/space continuum magic illusion dreaminess chocolate o’clock occurs twice in one day. which it does. often. and it's the perfect little bit of joy and caffeine to boost me out of any afternoon lull that may occur.

lately i’ve been a sucker for mast brothers bars. their wrappers are so pretty and they often punctuate special occasions for eggboy and me: i like dropping them in his tip jars at shows, he got me the stumptown coffee one for valentine’s day, and there is no better way out of the dog house* than with a brooklyn blend in hand. {we also once spent a lovely afternoon tasting allllll of the chocolate at the mast brothers shop in williamsburg. i highly recommend doing this.}

*eggboy doesn't actually ever get placed in the dog house. or the puppy house. this is just a preemptive statement in case he ever, i don't know, forgets my three-quarters birthday.

another favorite chocolate {for when i run low on mast brothers or if there haven't been any recent special occasions that warrant spending $8 on a bar} is trader joe’s stone ground chocolate. i loooove the grainy texture of it and the compact round shape.

BLACK SESAME HAMANTASCHEN AND SPINACH + GRUYERE HAMANTASCHEN

if you liked yesterday's sweet potato hamantaschen, scoot on over to the jew and the carrot for more sacrilegious snackees of the black sesame and spinach + gruyere varieties. {there you'll also find insight into the party lives of teenage brian and me.}

RECIPE: SWEET POTATO HAMANTASCHEN

there are days when you only eat vegetables and then there are days when you only eat hamantaschen. around these parts we like to call the latter "taking the dollar now." as opposed to saving up your dollars to feel "good" at the end of the day. you know? as in, this weekend i felt super good and happy as i ate about twelve thousand hamantaschen right in a row, but on sunday night my belly h88888ed me. with a capital 8. which isn't to deter you from making these... rather it's to encourage you to make them because they are so good but you should keep some extra humans on hand to help eat them.

oh p.s. if you're like what is a hamantaschen? what is a chag purim? letmegooglethatforyou {bc gods only know i'd get the purim story mixed in with the easter bunny.}

p.p.s. be on the lookout soon for black sesame hamantaschen and sacrilege spinach + gruyere hamantaschen!

recipe: hamantaschen dough
{based on betty doman's hamantaschen, courtesy of anne schulman {mother of brian of "brian is numnums"}}

2 sticks of butter, softened
4 oz cream cheese, softened
1 egg yolk
pinch of salt
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
powdered sugar, for dusting

in a large bowl with an electric mixer, beat butter, cream cheese, egg yolk, and salt. add flour, half a cup at a time, to form a dough. wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for two hours.

WEEKEND WARRIORS

over the weekend i ate hamantaschen and basically only hamantaschen.
i showered, i brushed my hair, i went to manhattan {things i don't often do on a weekend}.
eggboy and i went to a roller derby in gowanus {things we don't often do on a weekend}.
and we saw dave play xenakis and viƱao {things i want to do way more often on a weekend}.

also this weekend i visited eggboy's apartment for the second time ever. {it has a pretty brick wall and a minnesota flag.}
the wind about knocked me horizontal.
and, look, a new feature began!

MY NAME IS ________

natti vogel's fun weird songs appeared on the playlist for nemo and just last week i met him in person for the first time and nearly had to put my sunglasses on because of the head-to-toe skin-tight shiny gold getup he donned {and of course his shiny personality}. natti sings songs about things like unconditional love, brown rice, and brooklyn. if you're in the city, check out his upcoming shows at spectrum {feb. 20} and at the bureau of general services-queer division {feb. 28}.

STYLISH PEOPLE IN BROOKLYN

last week i shot a few stylish people on the street for brooklyn exposed in preparation for brooklyn fashion weekend which is {i think??} next week. as you may know, style does not run in my family or in my closet or anywhere in the vicinity of me because why spend money on shoes when you can spend it on matcha green tea powder and black sesame seeds? so this photo series was a bit of a challenge...

RECIPE: ASIAN SLIDERS

i made sliders based on my family's potsticker filling recipe because i am completely dumpling-ed out in this moment {the past few weeks my hands have formed probably hundreds of dumplings} but i somehow can't get past the delightful combination of fresh ginger and green onions all together in meaty solidarity.

the soft steamed buns provide a wonderful vehicle for these puppies, but they are also great served on a bed of sesame saucy brussels sprouts.
